VIGILANT: RPF personnel inspecting baggage at Madurai railway station.

MADURAI: Security has been stepped up at the railway station here on Friday on the eve of Independence Day celebration.

Parcel booking has been suspended from Friday to Sunday, though perishable goods are being accepted after thorough checking by the Railway Protection Force and Tamil Nadu Railway Police (TRP) personnel.

Two door-frame metal detectors have been placed on either sides of the new foot over-bridge in addition to the existing one at the eastern entrance. The old foot-over-bridge has been closed for regulating the movement of people.

A sniffer dog has been pressed into service to sanitise the railway coaches and platforms. All the trains were being escorted by armed men. Empty rakes from the yard were also been escorted to platforms.

TRP personnel were checking the baggage of passengers.
