Student drowns

CHENNAI: A third year student of a private engineering college drowned at the Elliot’s Beach on Friday.
According to police sources, S. Sathya Prabhu (20) of Perambur went to the beach for a swim with two of his friends G. Jaiganesh (21) and S. Daniel (19), also engineering students, around 6 a.m.
The trio were pulled into the sea by a tide.
Local fishermen who were in the vicinity rescued the students.
While Sathya Prabhu died, two others were admitted to a private hospital.
The Shastri Nagar police have registered a case.
Jewellery stolen
About 90 sovereigns of jewellery were reported stolen from a house in Kolathur on Thursday.
According to police sources, Murugesan (55), a Reserve Bank of India official residing in Kolathur, had gone out with his wife for shopping. When they returned home in the evening, the grill gate and main door were found open. Ninety sovereigns of jewellery kept in the almirah was missing. Forensic experts were pressed into service. A team has been formed to probe the case.
