NOTHING GOES WASTE: A. Madhuram, Executive Engineer, JNNURM, inaugurating a vermin-compost unit at Thideer Nagar on Friday. MADURAI: The Corporation Executive Engineer, A. Madhuram, inaugurated a vermi-compost yard set up by the Thenmadurai Kalanjiyam Federation of Women self-help groups (SHGs) at Thideer Nagar on Friday. The yard has been established with Rs. 9.50 lakh from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and a public contribution of Rs. 1.25 lakh. The SHG, in association with the Madurai Corporation, has been implementing the solid waste management in Thideer Nagar. With a team of 29 members, the SHG has been working to collect domestic waste from 1,290 houses in Thideer Nagar, segregate it into degradable and non-degradable waste. While the inorganic waste would be safely dumped in the Corporation garbage collection vehicles, the organic waste would be used to manufacture manure. More on the cardsMr. Madhuram said that vermi-composting would fetch income if done properly. Based on the success of the unit, similar units would come up. Programme leader of DHAN Foundation, Madhan Kumar, said that out of the 900 kg of garbage generated every day in this area, each house would produce a minimum of 300 grams of degradable waste. City project officer, JnNURM, V. Rajendran, distributed pamphlets on solid waste management.
