VISAKHAPATNAM: As the nation is gearing up to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday, the Save Indian Family Foundation, an NGO fighting for Men’s Rights and Family Harmony, is holding its national conference in the picturesque hills of Shimla, the Capital of Himachal Pradesh, to chalk out a nation-wide programme to achieve independence of a different kind, namely false charges of dowry law, Domestic Violence Alimony etc. “We want freedom from the draconian provisions of Section 498(a), which the Supreme Court termed as legal terrorism,” said B.K. Agarwal, president of the ‘Save Family Harmony’, who is attending the conference. Save Family Harmony is an off-shoot of Save Indian Family Foundation and 12 members from the city are attending the conference. Giving out instances of harassment of whole families by daughters-in-law, Kishore, leading criminal lawyer in the city, said the word ‘cruelty’ in the Act was being misused. Mr. Agarwal pointed out that the increase in the number of 498(a) cases proved that the Act had not been serving its purpose.
