Mixed doubles tennis could be included

NEW DELHI: The mixed doubles event in tennis could be considered for inclusion in the 2012 London Olympics if the International Tennis Federation (ITF) guaranteed that the top players in singles would be able to participate.

This was decided by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its meeting in Berlin on Thursday.

A final decision would be taken at the December meeting of the IOC EB.

The IOC EB also gave its backing to golf and rugby sevens as two additional sports for the 2016 Games.

These two sports will need the approval of the full IOC Session in Copenhagen in October this year before being included in the Olympics programme.

Replaced

In canoeing, it was decided to replace men’s C2 500m with women’s K1 200m. Further, it was decided to replace the remaining three men’s 500m sprint events with 200m sprint ones.

In handball, the placement matches are to be removed.

Federations in wrestling, swimming and cycling made requests for new events, but the IOC EB informed that this could happen if the new events increased participation of women at the Games. — Special Correspondent
