Aparajith shines in City I win

CHENNAI: B. Aparajith (95) and Ganga Sridhar Raju (78) put on 145 runs for the second wicket to help City I defeat City II by virtue of the first innings lead in the TNCA under-19 cricket tournament held here.

In another match, M. Ashwin took four wickets to bowl out City IV for 122 in response to City III’s first innings score of 334.

The scores: City II 196 lost to City I 307 for seven in 90 overs (Ganga Sridhar Raju 78, Aparajith 95, Shravan Krishnan 61) by virtue of first innings lead.

City III 334 bt City IV 122 in 49.4 overs (S. Rajiv Abhulash 46, M. Ashwin four for 52, A.K. Balachandar three for 21) and 103 for two in 36 overs (S. Vishal 50 n.o., U. Sasi Dev 41) by virtue of first innings lead.

Shashank advances

Ransa Club’s Shashank S. Yogesh defeated S. Gnaneswaran (SDAT-AKG) 11-9, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10 in a sub-junior boys’ quarterfinal match of the J.V.S. Rao Memorial seventh State-ranking table tennis tournament at the Hall of TT (Nehru Stadium) here on Friday.

Other results (quarterfinals): Sub-junior boys: K.R. Rohit (Don Bosco) bt Naren Kumar (Ransa) 11-4, 13-11, 11-5; S. Nikhil (CTTF) bt M. Anirudh (Ransa) 14-16, 5-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-8; V. Abinay (YMCA-K) bt S. Suraj (Ransa) 11-9, 11-2, 11-7.

Bertram tournaments from Sunday

The 77th edition of the Bertram Memorial tournaments begin on Sunday at Loyola College. This was announced by Fr. G. Arokiaraj, President, Tournament Committee, at a press meet here on Friday.

Over 1500 participants from 60 teams — 55 colleges and five schools — will vie for titles in eight disciplines — chess, tennis singles, tennis doubles, table tennis singles, table tennis doubles, volleyball, ball badminton and basketball.

The roster of participating teams includes two colleges from Kerala and one from Andhra Pradesh, said S. Vijayakumar, Tournament Secretary.

The 15-day event will conclude with the basketball final on August 30.

Under-10 cricket tournament

Prahlad Cricket Club will conduct an under-10 cricket tournament from August 16 to October 1. Eight teams from across the city will participate in the tournament which will be organised on a league-cum-knock-out basis.

Kancheepuram qualifies

Kancheepuram maintained a clean slate in the league phase and qualified for the pre-quarterfinals of the TNCA under-22 inter-district cricket tournament at Coimbatore on Thursday.

In its last league match, Kancheepuram posted a comfortable eight-wicket win over Dharmapuri to top the table.

The scores: Dharmapuri 113 in 35.4 overs (A.C. Pradeepan five for 16) lost to Kancheepuram 116 for two in 18 overs (Kevin Sukumar 46 n.o., Bharat Ram 37 n.o.).
