Tourist death: three arrested

Udhagamandalam: Three persons have been arrested in connection with the death of a French tourist at Bokkapuram near the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve near here on Friday. Del Yotel Annie was trampled to death while photographing a herd of wild elephants. Her son Fredrick Jean Lue (39) was injured.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Superintendent of Police Kapil Kumar C. Saratkar said Joji Philip (47), manager of the resort where the tourists were staying, had been arrested. Resort guides E. George (36) and S. Raju (27), who had accompanied them on the trek, had also been held. The resort had been closed and a case registered.

All resorts in the area had been told not to take foreign or domestic tourists into the forests. If they did not comply, action would be initiated under the Forest Act and the Criminal Procedure Code. The police should be informed about the arrival and departure of foreign tourists.

Field Director, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Rajiv K. Srivastava, said though the incident did not take place in the reserve, the circumstances would be analysed and a set of do’s and don’ts put in place for those organising trekking.
