Kadannappally benefits from CPI(M) gesture CPI not ready to spare any portfolio THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI(M), which has already shown much graciousness by accommodating the Congress(S) leader Kadannappally Ramachandran in the Cabinet, appears also set to spare a portfolio for him. The party leadership is understood to be discussing various options and will take a final call by Monday. The party is reported to have decided to give the Devaswom portfolio, being held by Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran, and the Printing and Stationery portfolio, which was with the Janata Dal(S), to Mr. Ramachandran, who will be sworn in as Minister along with Kerala Congress(J) leader P.J. Joseph and pro-Gowda Janata Dal (S) nominee Jose Thettayil at the Raj Bhavan here at 11.30 a.m. on Monday. There was talk about the CPI(M) asking the CPI to spare the Housing or Animal Husbandry portfolio, but CPI leaders told The Hindu here on Sunday that the CPI(M) leadership had not come up with any such proposal and no discussion on the topic had taken place so far. They insisted that while they were fully in agreement with the decision to accommodate Mr. Ramachandran, they were not ready to spare any of the portfolio for him. The CPI already has the grouse that the CPI(M), at the time of portfolio allocation after the Left Democratic Front came to power, had taken away some of the portfolios which had traditionally remained with it. The CPI(M) might consider clipping at least one of the portfolios held by Mathew T. Thomas, who resigned as Transport Minister following a decision to that effect by his parent party. This might see a minor shuffle in the portfolios. Mr. Joseph, who returns to the Cabinet after being cleared of the sexual misbehaviour charge brought up against him, will get the Public Works portfolio, which was held by his party colleague Mons Joseph.
