Stage set for State Women’s chess tournament

OCAC and Kalinga Chess Academy holding the 3-day event

BHUBANESWAR: The stage is set for the State Women’s Chess Tournament in the Capital commencing on Saturday. The three-day event is being hosted at the OAS Association Building in Kharavela Nagar by Orissa Chess Ad-hoc Committee (OCAC) in association with the Kalinga Chess Academy.

Academy director Sibabrata Das told this newspaper that the All-India Chess Federation has appointed the OCAC to conduct the tournament. The best four participants of the meet would represent the State in the National Women’s Chess Championship in Nagpur next month; he said and added that the top 10 performers would also be conferred trophies. It would be a nine-round contest, it was learnt.

Any woman chess player residing in the State would be eligible to join the tournament upon payment of a participation fee of Rs.100 latest by Thursday evening at the venue, informed tournament coordinator Manoj Panigrahi. Under-17 State Meet for boys and girls The Ganjam District Chess Association (GDCA) would host the Orissa State Under-17 Chess Championships by boys and girls for the year 2009 under the aegis of OCAC at Berhampur from August 27 to 29.

The event would be held at Chaturbhuj Dharmasala in Aska Road and application for participation would be received at the venue along with a fee of Rs.100 till August 26, the Committee officials informed. The champions and the runners-ups of each category would represent Orissa in the national championship meet to be held in Chakradharpur in Jharkhand from October 6 to 14, they added.
