Jail term for rape attempt

Kozhikode: The Assistant Sessions Court III here has sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment for four years and imposed a fine of Rs.15,000 on him for attempting to rape his neighbour in her house at Panniyankara here on August 8, 2002.

K.P. John, judge, on Thursday, found S. Jaison, 32, guilty under sections 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment); 376 (rape); 448 (house trespass); and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused was awarded rigorous imprisonment for four years under Section 511 and for six months each under sections 448 and 506. The sentences will run concurrently.

The court directed that the fine be used to compensate the victim. If the accused does not pay, he will have to spend six more months in prison.

Additional Public Prosecutor Joju Cyriac appeared for the prosecution.
