Minister for Food and Civil Supplies visits hospital

Checking up: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Hartal Halappa visited gastroenteritis patients in Government Hospital in Arsikere on Thursday.

HASSAN: As many as 128 people with gastroenteritis are undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital and nursing homes in Arsikere town.

On Thursday, doctors said that the patients were responding to treatment and were in a stable condition.

District Health Officer Nagaraja Rao said that water contamination could have caused the infection. The District Surveillance Officer had been asked to collect water and food samples and educate people on preventive measures, he said.

Sub-jail

Mr. Rao said that undertrials in jail who had consumed the contaminated water had also fallen ill. Of the 39 undertrials in Arsikere sub-jail, 38 had gastroenteritis. One prisoner was shifted to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment and was recovering, he said.

Mr. Rao said that the hospitalised patients complained of vomiting and diarrhoea on Thursday morning after having consumed water supplied to certain areas in the town on Wednesday night.

People from Tirupathihalli nearby also complained of vomiting and diarrhoea. All of them were rushed to hospital.

Of the 128 people affected, 75 people are undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital, 38 are being treated at the sub-jail and 15 in four nursing homes.
