Photo ID mandatory at Goa hotels
Special Correspondent
PANAJI: The Goa administration has ordered that hotels in the tourist State disallow visitors from checking in without producing valid photo identity proof.
The directive is also applicable to lodging and boarding, private guest houses and paying guest accommodation of all religious bodies, as part of the security measures initiated by the government in view of terrorist threats in the country.
The identity proof would include a Smart card, the voter identity card, employment card, an ATM card or any other photo identity issued by a recognised authority. The person in-charge of the accommodation shall provide all such information to the police when asked.
Explaining the rationale of the order, a government spokesman said that after a crime, it became difficult to locate the culprit based on the information recorded in hotel registers. For, it was often found to be bogus.
The order, effective from Thursday, would remain in force for 60 days, up to October 18. Any person contravening it would be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
