Revoke ban on book: CPI

K.V. Prasad

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India on Thursday condemned the decision of the Gujarat government to impose a ban on Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence by Jaswant Singh, saying that such a move reflected intolerance to non-RSS ideas.

Dubbing the decision “anti-democratic,” the CPI said many, including the party, may not agree with all the ideas put forth by the MP and the former Union Minister.

“In fact there is nothing common between communists and Mr. Jaswant Singh. But in a democratic society everybody has a right to put forth his ideas and opinions before the public, as long as it is not against the larger interests of the nation,” party deputy general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy said.

The CPI pointed out that there were several books where critical remarks were made on Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other respected leaders of the country and evaluating the role of a particular leader on a specific issue would not denigrate the leader’s image among the people.

“People are wise enough to evaluate the personalities as a whole, based on their contribution to the freedom struggle,” the release said.
