Orissa
BHUBANESWAR: Samrudha Odisha, a regional political outfit, here on Friday demanded that Orissa should be declared a drought-hit State in view of uneven distribution of rainfall. “The erratic rainfall has wreaked havoc in the State. In June, Orissa had 60.3 per cent of less rains while in July it received 72.8 per cent of excess rains. Again in August, monsoon played truant as 49.5 per cent of scant rainfall was recorded in the month,” members of Samrudha Odisha said. While the Union government had declared three States as drought-hit, several districts of Orissa could not be included due to negligence of the State government, they charged. With irrigated land in State shrinking gradually and 50 per cent of tubewells defunct, farmers were staring at bad days, the party said. The State government should come out with a contingency plan for revival of agriculture and push for pulses production, workers demanded.
