COIMBATORE: The Cotton Development and Research Association of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI-CDRA) has expanded its cotton development extension activities. According to a release from the association, it is implementing cotton development programmes in Banswara and Bhilwara districts in Rajasthan under Mini Mission II of the Technology Mission on Cotton. An additional 25,000 acres had been covered in these two districts this year, bringing the total area to 50,000 acres. SubsidyAbout 600 farmers were participating in the programme and they would receive Rs. 8.4 lakh subsidy in the form of fertilizers, micro-nutrients and pesticides. Training programmes would be organised for all the farmers. Cotton sowing was over in all the cotton districts in Rajasthan. However, in Bhilwara, the early sown crop had withered away due to delayed rain and the farmers had to go in for sowing again. Estimate revisedMeanwhile, the South India Cotton Association here revised its cotton crop estimate for 2009-2010 season to 301 lakh bales. According to the association, the crop situation in the country might change if the present weather situation continued. Rain was delayed in Tamil Nadu and only 50 per cent sowing was over in some districts (such as Vellore, Salem and Dharmapuri). In Maharashtra and Gujarat, the two major cotton growing States in the country, though the crop was in good shape now rain was needed to protect the crop. In its weekly report of the cotton crop, the association said for 2008-09, about 32 lakh bales of exports were registered so far and the cotton arrivals were nearly 290 lakh bales.
