DMDK strengthens vote bank
K. Raju
CUMBUM: In the absence of the AIADMK and MDMK, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam has expanded its vote bank in the Cumbum constituency and strengthened its base in the byelection, thanks to effective campaign by the party leader Vijaykant and last two-day powerful whirlwind campaign by his wife Premalatha.
The DMDK vote bank was almost doubled in the byelection compared to the 2004 Assembly poll.
The DMDK candidate R. Arun Kumar gained 24,142 votes, 21.5 per cent of total votes polled in the constituency.
(Total votes polled in the constituency were 1,12,165.)
In the 2006 Assembly polls, the then DMDK candidate Jegannath Misra had garnered 12,360 votes only.
The DMDK had not gained more than 16 per cent of votes in many constituencies in the district.
This was the first time it had gained more than 20 per cent in the election.
