Farm production likely to suffer
Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI: With the southwest monsoon belied completely, agricultural production in the district is all set suffer a huge jolt this year.
Even as dry spell prevailing in the catchment areas of all 11 reservoirs in the district and consequently the storage level in the dams dwindling fast, only 53 of the 2,449 irrigation tanks in the district has some water, which cannot be used for any agricultural purpose.
The district, which usually receives an average rainfall of 29.60 mm during June, received only 13.61 mm this year.
The precipitation was still worse in last July as the district was blessed with only 5.68 mm against the normal rainfall of 26.40 mm. During August, the district, which should have received 23.30 mm rainfall, has experienced no precipitation till date.
Following this tragedy, farmers in the district, particularly beyond Ambasamudram, are not prepared to test their fortunes during this ‘kar’ paddy season and desisted from any sort of agricultural activity. “It will be disastrous, if we plant something in our field as there is no water for irrigation,” said A. Ganesan of Kurichi near here.
In the grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday with Collector M. Jayaraman in chair, the farmers expressed hope that at least the ensuing ‘pisanam’ paddy season would bail them out.
