‘Stand on nuke deal vindicated’

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Left parties’ stand on the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal is vindicated, Communist Party of India leader D. Raja has said.

Addressing journalists at a meeting here on Friday, he said, “The U.S. measures to deny enrichment and reprocessing rights to the country at a G8 meeting, has vindicated the Left stand that America wants India to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) and be its ally.”

“U.S. double standards have clearly come to light after it asked the G8 nations to allow ENR technology to only those nations that had signed the NPT. This was not what it said at the Nuclear Suppliers Group which clearly goes on to show that U.S. wants India to act on its terms.”

He asked the Union Government to not give in to American pressure on the issue and also climate change.

Carbon

“It is the U.S. and E.U. that must cut back on carbon emissions because their per capita emission is much above the world average. India’s is far below,” he said and added that it did not mean that the country would not take measures to address global warming and climate change issues.

“What the Left is saying is that the Government must act on its own terms keeping in mind its interests and not give in to American pressure.”

Mr. Raja also said that under United Progressive Alliance government the country was fast becoming an ally and a strategic partner of U.S., which was detrimental to the people’s interests.
