Ban on chemical idols
Staff Reporter
Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has slapped a ban on immersion of idols made of chemicals and inorganic paints in water bodies during the ensuing Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations.
District Environmental Engineer of TNPCB R. Kannan said that the idols used for immersion should be made of raw clay (not baked) alone to avoid polluting the channels and ponds.
“The immersion of idols made of chemicals like plaster of paris and chemical paints will result in water pollution and affects the environment and hence the directive,” he added. Mr. Kannan said that the Board had identified eight places in the district to immerse the Ganesha idols used for worshipping during the festival.
The designated points include Samalapuram Lake, PAP canals at Andipalayam, Pongalur, Gedimedu and S.V.Puram, and Amravathi River at Kaniyur and Dharapuram, and lower bhavani project canal at Thittuparai.
Route
Superintendent of Police S. Santhi told reporters here that processions taking Ganesha idols for immersion would be allowed only through the routes drawn by the district administration for the purpose.
“People taking part in the processions should avoid using provocative slogans that can disturb communal harmony,” she said.
