Now, the Lord gets taller and taller!

HIS HIGHNESS! The 58-foot-high Ganesha idol, installed by the Gajuwaka Sampath Vinayaka Youth Association, on the eve of Vinayaka Chavithi in the city on Saturday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Lord gets taller every year and this year the tallest in the State stands at 58 feet. The towering idol of Lord Vinayaka at Gajuwaka is said to be the tallest in the State. Installed by the Gajuwaka Sampath Vinayaka Youth Association, this year the idol has surpassed the Khairatabad Ganesha idol that stands at 48 feet. The total cost of the setup was Rs.18 lakhs. The imposing idol is sure to inspire awe among thousands of devotees who are expected to visit the venue during the festival. It was the skilled workmanship of 20 workers from West Bengal and 45 days of non-stop toil that created the magnificent idol.

“Unlike other idols, we have not used iron, plaster of Paris and oil-based colours. We have only used clay specially brought from Kolkata, dry grass and water-based colours. They give a natural look to the idol and are eco-friendly,” says T. Jagadeesh Reddy, president of the association.

The association has also lined up several cultural programmes like devotional song concert and classical dance performances during the festival. Devotees can have darshan from Sunday. The idol will be dissolved at the same place on August 31.
