VIRUDHUNAGAR: The “Kalaignar Kaapitu Thittam” (CM’ insurance scheme for lifesaving treatments) has been introduced with an objective of preventing people from falling into debt trap due to costly medical treatments, the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, has said.

Addressing a meeting organised here to discuss ways to identify and enrol beneficiaries here on Monday, he said that many families had been burdened with huge debts after providing treatments for critical health ailments.

Five crore people in the State would be covered under the scheme.

Each family could get lifesaving treatments from over 300 private hospitals.

Collector Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan said that door-to-door enumeration to identify and enrol beneficiaries was under way.

Besides members and their dependents of any of 26 welfare boards, all those families, the annual income did not exceed Rs.72,000, were eligible to be enrolled under the scheme.

The people should get their income certificates ready along with the ration cards before the photographing camps that are scheduled to begin on September 2.

The details of the family members along with their right and left hand thumb impressions would be taken. “Till these smart cards are given to the beneficiaries, they could get treatment by using the ration card, income certificate issued to them,” the Collector said. Stating that most of people of the target group were illiterate, the Collector wanted the village administrative officers and tax collectors to collect the filled-in application forms and submit them at the Taluk office or at the municipal commissioners’ offices.

A series of publicity campaign would be taken up to create an awareness of the scheme.

Deputy Director (Health-Sivakasi) S. Balasubramanian said that 13 children registered under the “Ilam Sirar Idhaya Pathugappu Thittam” were enrolled under the new scheme.

District Revenue Officer B. Ganesan, Deputy Director (Health-Virudhunagar) R. Vadivelan, and heads of all departments were present.
