RAMANATHAPURAM: The Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden S. Sundararaju has said that the State Government has asked the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to undertake a comprehensive study to prevent elephants getting killed while trying to cross railway tracks. Speaking to The Hindu here he said the government was aware of the recurrence of elephants getting killed in the railway tracks between Palakkad and Coimbatore, Dharmapuri and a few other areas. It had to be ascertained whether the operation of trains in high speed was the main reason for this. Many more factors were involved for the accidents. They had to be listed out. Mr. Sundararaju said since the stretch between Palakkad and Coimbatore was a bordering area between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Wildlife Trust of India had been asked to look into the aspect. It would study the causes of accidents from the railway aspect, including speed of trains, available mechanism to get information on elephants crossing train tracks and others. He added that reasons for elephants entering human habitations, season and timing of pachyderms crossing railway tracks, cross border movements and others would also be ascertained. The Chief Wildlife Warden said that the WTI had also been asked to come out with preventive measures to save elephants from getting killed in trains.
