Station master hoists national flag

S. Nagabooshanam, Station Master, Ariyalur Railway Station, hoisted the National Flag during the Independence Day celebrations at the CSI Higher Secondary School, Ariyalur. He recalled the selfless services rendered by the freedom fighters to free the country from the clutches of the British regime. The Headmaster, A. Selvaraj, presided. A large number of students participated in the handwriting and poems composing competitions held in connection with the celebrations and prizes were distributed to the winners. A couple of students rendered a poem titled ‘Yethu Suthanthiram’. The Chief Commercial Inspector of the Ariyalur Railway Station, R. Venkatachalam, Assistant Headmistress, K. Helen and others spoke.

Independence Day celebrated

The president of the Thanjavur District Muslim Educational Association, A. Jirgis hoisted the Tricolour during the 63rd Independence Day celebrations at the Al-Ameen Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam. He called upon the students to follow great leaders who fought for the freedom of the country. The Correspondent of the school, M. Kamaludeen urged the students to shun inhibitions and face the future with total confidence. The School Principal, S. Syed Abdul Subahan and the school committee member, N. Ahamed Thambi offered felicitations. Students presented cultural programmes at the end.

Science exhibition

A large number students displayed various exhibits at the annual science exhibition at the Srinivasa Rao Higher Secondary School, Thiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur district, recently. Former Professor M. Rajendran declared the exhibition open and Headmaster N. Rajendran presided. The exhibits focussed on protecting the farm lands; rain water harvesting; protecting the forests; environment protection; health and hygiene, achievement of Chandraayan, etc. The best exhibits will be disp layed at the district-level science exhibition planned shortly. PG teachers B. Anantharaman and T. Rajamoorthy offered felicitations. The students of sister schools visited the exhibition.

Training for NSS volunteers

Electricity conservation and safety seminar and training programme for the NSS volunteers of the higher secondary schools in Tiruvarur district was held at the National Higher Secondary School, Mannargudi on August 16. Headmaster (in-charge) of the National HSS R. Elangovan presided. The Divisional Engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, P. Gunasekaran, inaugurated the training programme. The officials of the TNEB Training Centre, Thanjavur, S. Sampath and Sivakumar were t he resource persons at the seminar. NSS district liaison officer, N. Rajappa offered felicitations.

Karur school wins in yoga contest

The Kongu Vellalar Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vaiyapuri Nagar, Karur, won the overall championship at the State-level Meditation Yoga Competition organized by the Sri Varahi Manthralayam Trust, Coimbatore on August 15. The school students excelled in all the categories to win the championship. The school was also awarded a special prize for sending more number of participants. The president of the Kongu Educational Trust, M. Nachimuthu, secretary, R. Manoharan and the Principal, V. Periasamy commended the winners and their trainer Madhavan, Ponni and Pon Senthil Rajan.

Geneva Convention Day

Geneva Convention Day was celebrated at the Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam. The Administrative Secretary of the Little Flower HSS, L. Robert Selvan, was the chief guest. P. John Stephen, Junior Red Cross block convener, Native HSS, P. Saravanan, Native HSS, S. Syed Abdul Subahan, Principal, Al-Ameen Matriculation HSS, spoke on the yeoman services rendered by the Red Cross volunteers in saving the lives of injured soldiers during wars. Kumaran, Sub-Inspec tor of Police, distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions.

Students present cultural events

The 63 rd Independence Day was celebrated with usual gaiety at the S.M. Hindu Matriculation School, Sirkali, Nagapattinam district. Sundararaman presided over the function and unfurled the National Flag. The Administrative Officer, Thangavelu and the Principal, Saratha also spoke. The students presented a demonstration physical exercises like forming pyramids, mass drill etc. They also presented cultural programmes at the end.

Literacy programme launched

R. Rajagopal, Warrant Officer, Thanjavur Air Force Station, hoisted the Tricolour during the Independence Day celebrations at the Shri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur. Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the role played by the defence personnel in protecting the boundaries of the country facing heavy odds. He motivated the students to join the defence forces. The Correspondent of the school, S. P. Balasubramanian announced 50 per cent fee reduction to the wards of the serving defence personnel. Senior Principal S. Gowri and Principal G. Jaishankar also spoke. The highlight of the celebrations was the launching of the 100 days literacy programme for women by the NSS unit of the school.

The sports day of Yagappa School at Thanjavur was held on August 21 and August 22 at the school. The events were for LKG and UKG students of the school on the first day. Tiny tots made an impressive show by their march past, flag hoisting and in competing with each other in various sports events. L. John Martin Alexis, Consultant Anaesthesiologist was the chief guest and Mrs. Salamie John distributed prizes to the winners.

On Saturday it was for primary students. A. Sadhana, Manager, Human Relations, Jet Airways, South India was the chief guest. She distributed prizes to the winners. After an impressive and colourful march past, the students took the Olympic torch around and lighted it. Two hundred meters, hundred meters finals were held followed by the relay event. There were competitions for parents and teachers too. Mass drill, aerobics, pyramids done by students attracted the audience. Edward Arogyaraj, Correspondent of the school, S.P. Anthonisamy, Correspondent of Parisutham Institute of Science and Technology and S. P. Selvaraj, Correspondent of Gnanam school of Business participated in the function.
