ENTERTAINMENT: Artistes staging a play in Thanjavur.

THANJAVUR: Theatre has taken a backseat with the impact of films and television. Though Nataka sabhas were the origin for many old famous artists to enter film industry, staging dramas are now considered labourious and costly propositions. But then the art is nurtured by some die hard ‘Nataka Kavalars’.

One such organisation is the Thanjai Cauvery Annai Kalai Mandram. It has been oganising Nataka Peruvizha-drama festival for the past 39 years. The dramas are staged every year at Ramanathan hall near old bus stand. This year also the festival started on August 15, Independence Day. Tiruchi S. M. A. Drama troupe staged ‘Nadu Adhai Nadu’ -a patriotic drama on that day. Cauvery M. V. Muthu, founder president of the Thanjavur Cauvery Annai Kalai Mandram, who declared that the art is in his blood and that it will remain till his death, could manage to get drama troupes across the state to perform in the festival which will go on till August 28. “People should patronise dramas. It is one of the toughest arts as an actor needs presence of mind to adjust to various situations to act. Audience see the reality on the stage unlike films which are shot and screened” Muthu says. Subramanya Sharma, president of Thanjavur Hotliers Association, who inaugurated the festival said that it was something extraordinary that the Kalai Mandram has been organising drama festival for the past 39 years. Other troupes also performed till August 21.
