Onerous task: Cleaning up the portion of the Vrishabhavati’s tributary that flows through Jnana Bharati campus is a key component of the environmental protection action plan. BANGALORE: Cleaning up the portion of the Vrishabhavati’s tributary that flows through the Jnana Bharati campus, implementing solid waste management programmes and working towards effective groundwater recharge mechanisms by building check dams, compost pits and harvesting rainwater are some of the key components of the environmental protection action plan for the Jnana Bharati campus. These plans were evolved as a result of the experts’ round table that was held here on Monday. Calling upon Bangalore University to take up the responsibility of spearheading the cause, environmentalist and ex-forest official A. N. Yellappa Reddy said that “a biological time bomb was ticking in the underground aquifers of cities such as Bangalore owing to pollution from various sources, electronic waste in particular”. The key-note address was delivered by Lucas Dengel, CEO of Eco-pro in Auroville, who proceeded to make a presentation on “Effective micro-organisms technology for river basin revival”. The inaugural was followed by three presentations. While a Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP) team explained the existing Vrishabhavati Valley treatment pilot project, Professor of Geology Renuka Prasad presented a study of the campus using remote sensing and GIS. Reader of the Department of Environmental Science of Bangalore University Nandini presented a detailed proposal to rehabilitate water supply and sewerage systems of the campus.
