WELL DONE: M. A. Alagappan, Executive Chairman, Murugappa Group handing over a gold medal to an academic achiever at the fifth convocation of National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi on Saturday — TIRUCHI: Engineers and technocrats of our country should pay a serious attention to the emerging problem being caused by global warming. Young technocrats should take up the social responsibility of evolving sustainable and greener technological solutions for industrial applications for the benefit of posterity, observed Executive Chairman, Murugappa Group M. A. Alagappan. Delivering the convocation address at the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T) near here on Saturday, Mr. Alagappan said that environmental degradation arising out of global warming was a serious global concern. Pointing out that growth without sustainability was the major cause of global warming, Mr. Alagappan urged the outgoing engineers to evolve a sustainable and greener technological solutions for industrial applications. Explaining the advantages of compost manufacturing by the Murugappa Group of companies through the identification of organic carbon got from municipal solid wastes, Mr. Alagappan exhorted the engineering graduates to make the maximum utilisation of agricultural waste for promoting organic farming techniques. Pat for NIT-TComplimenting the role of the NIT-T in ensuring quality education, research and development, Mr. Alagappan emphasised the need for giving an impetus to manufacturing sector. He said that the global economic crisis has thrown multiple opportunities for young entrepreneurs to come forward and execute their brilliant ideas. Chairman of Board of Governors, NIT-T, R. Seshasayee, spoke on the importance of innovation and urged the students to make the most of the opportunities available in the present-day context. Director of NIT-T M. Chidambaram, in his report, said that the ‘Cell for Intellectual Property Rights’ floated this year, has drafted its policy for implementation. The policy aimed at promoting sustainability in growth, encouraging creativity for enhancing innovative production. MoUs signedThe NIT-T had signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan; Universidade Estadual de Maringa, Brazil and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research. These MoUs, he said, aimed at promoting faculty training, collaborative research, sponsorship for Ph.D and M.S. projects and sharing the infrastructural facilities for mutual benefit. It has been planned to enter into an MoU with a few institutions and industries this year. Medals givenEarlier, Mr. Alagappan conferred the degree on a total of 1,016 students, including Ph.D on 40 candidates. He also presented medals and prizes to toppers.
