TIRUCHI: In a first of its kind initiative, the city police distributed auto cards to autorickshaw drivers here on Monday.

The card contains all details including the vehicle number; name and driving licence number of the driver, his blood group, address and mobile number; name and mobile number of the vehicle owner, fitness certificate and registration details, and stand location.

Distributing the cards to a group of drivers at a brief function here, Commissioner of Police Karuna Sagar told the media that details of all the 3,250 autos plying within the city limits have been collected.

Mass contact programmes will be initiated at the level of every police station shortly to ascertain problems faced by the residents on issues pertaining to crime, law and order and traffic, and obtain their suggestions and views on crime and traffic management.

The first programme will be in Fort Police Station limits, the Commissioner said, adding that he would preside over all such programmes.

As part of community policing measure, a vigilance committee will be constituted in every police station. About 200 members of the public would form part of each committee.

He said Inspectors and Sub Inspectors of police stations would make friendly calls by visiting houses falling within their respective jurisdiction and interact with the residents.
