Bibin Mathew wins

NEW DELHI: Bibin Mathew clocked 46.87s while winning the 400 metres in a near all-Indian field in the British athletics league meet at Newham, England, on Saturday.

In what was termed as ‘non-scoring events’, the Indians mostly competed among themselves. Mathew was followed by B.V. Bineesh (47.30), Shake Mortaza (47.79), Avin Thomas (47.87), K.M. Binu (48.05), Vinay Chaudhary (48.32) and Ajay Kumar (48.75). The only non-Indian in the field was Englishman Paige Haines who came last in 49.63s.

The team has since returned home after a six-week camp at Newham Leisure Centre.

Other Indian performances: Men: 100m: Non-scoring ‘A’ race: 1. Rahmatulla Molla 10.72, 3. Abdul Najeeb Qureshi 10.88, 4. Vishal Saxena 10.89; Non-scoring ‘B’ race: 1. Suresh Sathya 10.97, 2. Ritesh Anand 11.24. High jump: Benedict Starleu 2.05m, Jithin Thomas 1.95.

Shot put: Satyendra Kumar Singh 18.76m. Javelin: Kashinath Naik 69.89m.
