Thrissur
Thrissur: The Hindi film ‘Sikander’, directed by Piyush Jha, will bring the curtain down on the Fourth Thrissur International Film Festival on Thursday. Some of the other films to be screened are: Salt of this Sea (Director: Annemarie Jacir) Soraya, born in Brooklyn in a working class community of Palestinian refugees, discovers that her grandfather’s savings were frozen in a bank account in Jaffa when he was exiled in 1948. Direct, stubborn, and determined to reclaim what is hers, she fulfills her life-long dream of returning to Palestine. Slowly she is taken apart by the reality around her and is forced to confront her own anger. (at Sree theatre, 9:15 a.m.) Dear Summer Sister (Director: Nagisa Oshima) Dear Summer Sister is described as “a beautiful though dour meditation”. “Mr. Oshima was very big on meditations... on the return of Okinawa to Japan after years under the control of the U.S. military. As might be expected, Mr. Oshima’s reactions are, in the jargon of today’s TV pundits, ‘conflicted’. Japan, he seems to be saying, has never treated Okinawa and its inhabitants better than any other ‘imperialist” occupying force, though he obviously has no particular appreciation for those who took over the island’s occupation at the end of World War II," wrote The New York Times. (at Kairali theatre, 11:30 a.m.) Kaali Salwar (Director: Farida Mehta) Sultana, a small town prostitute and her pimp, Khudabaksh, migrate to the metropolis. Her business collapses. Sultana’s loneliness and despair get objectified in her desire for a ‘salwaar’ that she for the observance of mourning for Moharram. (at Sree theatre, 11:30 a.m.)
