It supplied essentials including rice and sugar free of cost to 20 lakh BPL families in the last one week. The distribution of kits, which included 12 kg of rice, to 1.2 lakh tribal families was progressing. Onam kits costing Rs.300, which contained items worth Rs.380 in the market, were very much in demand. An essential commodity worth Rs.10 was being given as prize along with these kits. Customers who bought items worth Rs.750 were being given 500 ml of Sabari coconut oil or 250 ml of Sabari tea as gift. Essentials would be distributed at subsidised rates during the Onam season through 16 Theeramaithri Supermarkets run jointly by the Supplyco and the Fisheries Department. Maveli HotelsSteps were taken to supply items to at least five Maveli Hotels in each district. The fair price hotels had already started functioning in the districts of Kottayam, Thrissur, Kollam, Ernakulam and Idukki. These hotels sold food items at prices decided by the district administration. Some 145 Onam markets and around 1,200 Onam Mini Fairs would function during the five days from August 28. With that the Supplyco would be able to provide its service to 10 lakh customers on an average daily. Five hundred vegetable stalls were also being specially opened this time to bring down the prices of vegetables in the open market. The Supplyco’s turnover during the last three weeks was Rs.182 crore. The total sales during the entire Onam season was expected to touch the Rs.225-crore mark which would be an all-time record for the agency.
