Yeddyurappa for more High Court judges

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has urged Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily to request the Supreme Court to raise the number of judges of the Karnataka High Court to 56, from the present 41, and ensure that the Circuit Benches at Dharwad and Gulbarga are made permanent Benches.

In a letter to the Union Law Minister, Mr. Yeddyurappa said about 85,000 cases were pending in the principal Bench in Bangalore.

The Chief Minister said that keeping in view the aspirations of the people of Karnataka, two Circuit Benches started functioning in Dharwad and Gulbarga since July, 2008.

Pending cases

Approximately 25,000 cases were pending before Dharwad Circuit Bench and 10,000 in Gulbarga, the Chief Minister said.

“I am sure you would agree that having regard to the total number of pending cases and the current rate of filing of cases before the Circuit Benches, there is a strong need for making them permanent Benches of the High Court. I understand that the High Court of Karnataka would also be sending a proposal in this regard,” the Chief Minister said.

Administration of justice was the joint responsibility of the States and the Centre. Therefore, in the interest of speedy dispensation of justice in the State and to relieve the work pressure on the judges, there was need for increasing the strength of judges of the High Court by 15, he said.
