Jayakumari Sonnappa elected ZP president

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: M.C. Jayakumari Sonnappa, representing Doddagattiganabbe constituency in Hoskote taluk, defeated Pramila Giridhar by three votes to get elected as president of the Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat here on Wednesday.

Ms. Sonnappa, who got elected as a Janata Dal (Secular) candidate and later defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), secured nine votes as against the six secured by Ms. Giridhar of the Janata Dal (S).

The post was reserved for a woman (general). While two members abstained from voting, one member was absent during the election. As the Vice-President’s post was reserved for Scheduled Caste, the lone candidate, Rajani Rajanna, was elected unopposed.

Ms. Rajanna, elected as a Congress candidate from Sasalu in Doddaballapur taluk, too defected to the BJP. Of the 18 members of the zilla panchayat, 11 belonged to the Janata Dal (S), six to the Congress and one was independent.

However, four Janata Dal (S) members from Hoskote taluk joined the camp of Labour Minister B.N. Bachche Gowda while three Congress members from Doddaballapur taluk joined the camp of J. Narasimhaswamy, MLA and Chairman of Karnataka Slum Clearance Board.

The newly elected president and vice president will have a 14-month term as six months of the 20-month term were lost in court litigation. Both of them assumed their offices immediately after the election in the afternoon.
