More lorry operators may join the strike

Staff Reporter

Lorry owners’ federation wants 300 cases dropped

Transport Minister has called for a meeting on August 29

BANGALORE: Even as one faction of truck operators is continuing with the strike by not transporting sand to Bangalore city, another faction on Wednesday threatened to go on indefinite strike from next Monday if operators’ demands are not met by the Government.

Members of Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ Association, headed by B. Channa Reddy, have been on strike since August 22, alleging harassment of sand transporters in the hands of several government departments.

On Wednesday, Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association, headed by G.R. Shanmugappa, held a meeting here and put forth four demands before the Government.

Mr. Shanmugappa told The Hindu the federation demanded withdrawal of over 300 cases registered against sand transporters; release of nearly 200 drivers arrested on theft charge. Their other demands include repayment of fine amount collected from transporters and the most important — vesting of all powers related to sand mining with the Mines and Geology Department instead of deputy commissioners of respective districts.

Mr. Shanmugappa said the federation would attend a meeting with the Mines and Geology Department on Saturday while Transport Minister R. Ashok had promised to resolve the issue.

Ultimatum

If the meeting failed to break the deadlock, members would go on indefinite strike from Monday, Mr. Shanmugappa said.
