Under-17 chess tournament gets under way

Over 60 participants are taking part in the event



Make a move: Competitors concentrate on their move at the State-level under-17 Chess Championship in Berhampur on Thursday.

BERHAMPUR: The ‘under 17 years’ State-level chess championship was inaugurated in the city on Thursday.

This three-day tournament has been organised by the Ganjam District Chess Association (GDCA) with the support of the State Chess Association. It was inaugurated by the Berhampur Sub-Collector, Dhananjaya Swain. Matches would be played in both boys and girls category in the tournament.

Over 60 participants from different parts of the State are taking part in this championship.

The president of the GDCA, Sanjiv Rao said a total of seven rounds would be played during three days to find out the winners. Two boys and two girls selected from the tournament would represent Orissa in the national ‘under 17’ chess championship to be played in Jharkhand next month, said the secretary of the association, K. K. Sharma.

As per the GDCA members this State-level tournament is expected to increase the popularity of this brain game among the youngsters of the city. Several small children were seen among the spectators of the tournament.

They had come over with their parents to learn from the games of players who were adept than them.

It may be noted that chess is picking up as a hobby and sport among youngsters in the State , when 14-year-old Padmini Raut became an international master earned name, fame and money, practically everything that children of her age can dream of.

Through it she created a following for the sport among parents as well as children in the State, which was quite evident during the State-level tournament being played in Berhampur.
