BANGALORE: Camels brought from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to Bangalore were rescued by the activists of Prani Daya Samithi with the assistance of the Thalgatpura police in the early hours of Thursday. In all, 43 camels were rescued — four from Basavanagudi and the rest from an open ground in Gottigere — after the animal rights activists complained of cruelty to animals. Of the 43 animals, 12 had injuries and a few of them had skin diseases. Nearly 80 persons, mostly women, have been taken into custody in this connection. “It is illegal to bring camels to Karnataka as the High Court has banned it since they (could) carry diseases. The climate does not suit them. Moreover, making them walk on the road, using them for joyride, improper feeding and no timely medicine are all cruelty to animals,” said Sunil Dugad of the Prani Daya Sangha. Although owners of the seized camels claim that they had brought them for entertainment, Mr. Dugad suspected they were intended for slaughter. The Thalgatpura police who have registered a case under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, said the animals would be sent to the Kaggalipura Veterinary Hospital from where they would be handed over to the Prani Daya Sangha.
