NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy on Friday released an updated version of the Indian Maritime Doctrine, incorporating the rapid changes in the geo-strategic environment, evolving complexities and transformational changes that the domain is witnessing. The 2009 edition was released here on Friday by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta. The 2009 document was first published in 2004 to provide a common understanding of the universally applicable maritime concepts, not only for people in uniform, but for the common man in general. The 200-page document factors in changing security environment, including low-intensity conflict and the transformation that is taking place in the Indian Navy, its technology and its personnel, Navy spokesman Cmdr. P.V.S. Sathish said. Since doctrines evolve over time, the present edition maintains its temporal relevance, addressing tenets of contemporary maritime thought, with emphasis on Indian maritime environment. More awarenessThe doctrine focuses on Concepts as well as Application of Maritime Power, and is the primary document from which other doctrines would flow. With increased emphasis on maritime affairs, the revised doctrine would serve to enhance awareness about India’s maritime environment, interests and provide the fundamentals for Readiness and Response planning.
