Paddy sowing still lower than last year

NEW DELHI: With 252 districts in 10 States declared drought-affected, there is a decline of 68.89 lakh hectares in paddy cultivation, compared with last year.

As per the statistics released by the Union Ministry of Agriculture, the acreage of coarse cereals, sugar cane and oilseeds is also lower this kharif than last year. However, the area under pulses and cotton is higher.

So far the total area under paddy is 289.28 lakh hectares. The area under coarse cereals is 183.04 lakh hectares, against 189.24 lakh hectares last year. The area under oilseeds is 158.61 lakh hectares, against 173.33 lakh hectares last year.

Sugar cane is also lower at 42.50 lakh hectares, against 43.79 lakh hectares last year.

The area under pulses is 90.75 lakh hectares, compared with 87.87 lakh hectares last year. Cotton has been sown on 96.21 lakh hectares, against 84.86 lakh hectares last year.
