Create awareness about consumer rights among students: Collector

NAMAKKAL: Collector U. Sagayam has urged officials of various departments to take steps to create awareness among school and college students on consumer rights.
Participating in a meeting of the district-level consumer protection committee on Friday, the Collector asked the officials to conduct more awareness programmes for school and college students in the district.
Consumer clubs should be formed in all educational institutions.
Mr. Sagayam said that the officials should conduct frequent inspections in commercial establishments to prevent unfair trade practices.
He instructed the officials of urban local bodies to inspect fruit shops and prevent the practice of artificial ripening of fruits.
Identify
Steps should also be taken up to identify dyeing units that were discharging effluents into open space and into the Cauvery River.
Stern action should be initiated against such units.
The district administration had closed 195 dyeing units that had violated the rules.
He distributed a sum of Rs. 2,500 each as assistance to five colleges for establishing consumer clubs.
District Revenue Officer Shanthi, District Supply and Consumer Protection Officer Ravindran and senior officials were present at the meeting that had been organised.
