Flood control room from September 1
Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: A flood control room will start functioning at the Collectorate from September 1. It will be in place till the end of the northeast monsoon, that is, December 31, according to Collector R. Palanisamy.
After a review meeting with officials on precautionary measures to be adopted, he told presspersons on Saturday that the control room would function round the clock and could be contacted toll free at 1077.
Police personnel and revenue officials equipped with wireless sets would man the control room on rotational basis.
The officials would monitor the Manimutharu and the Gomukhi and water level in the Sathanur dam.
Encroachments on waterways would be removed and people living in low-level areas and river banks alerted, Mr. Palanisamy said.
Mock drills would be conducted till September 10 in all flood-prone areas to create awareness among people.
Cyclone shelters would be kept ready and so also marriage and community halls to accommodate people who might get displaced by floods, Mr. Palanisamy said.
