COIMBATORE: The Race Course and Neighbourhood Association are distributing domestic composting kits to its members to encourage composting at home. Vijay Venkataswamy, president of the association, said though the Corporation was clearing the waste dumped in the public bins regularly, the association wanted to encourage composting at home so that the volume of waste coming to the public bins could be reduced. The Race Course and its neighbhouring areas had about 600 houses. It distributed 15 kits on a trial basis three months ago and now planned to extend it to more households. Using these kits, degradable kitchen waste could be brought down to nearly one-tenth volume and the manure could be used in the garden. Waste paper saleMr. Venkataswamy said the association was also planning sale of waste paper to ITC. The company already had a tie-up with the Residents’ Awareness Association of Coimbatore. It now offered Rs. 4.50 for a kg of card board boxes and good paper and Rs. 3 a kg for plastic and tetra pack. Some of the individual companies and nearly a dozen houses were selling the paper waste to the company. However, this was only when the waste piled up and not on a regular basis. Paper millsITC and several paper mills had come forward to collect paper and non-paper dry waste from the doorstep of the residents and the association planned to come out with a proposal soon.
