UPA failed to fulfil promises: Mysoora

‘Government failed to initiate steps to provide funds for development of backward areas’

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam senior leader and MP M.V. Mysoora Reddy criticised the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for not fulfilling its pre-election promises.

The UPA, which promised to work wonders in 100 days of coming to power, failed to initiate any steps to provide special funds for backward areas development and it had not fulfilled its assurance of appointing an ombudsman to monitor the works under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. While the demand for 33 per cent reservation to women in legislatures was yet to be conceded, the government had diluted the spirit of the Right to Information Act, he said.

Huge debt

Dr. Mysoora Reddy at a press conference on Sunday said the 100-day rule of the UPA resembled a firm opting for insolvency going by the quantum of loans it was obtaining.

The country’s debt had mounted to Rs. 15 lakh crore with annual debt servicing burden in excess of Rs. 2.2 lakh crore, but the government was granting subsidies to rich at the expense of the poor.

This was evident from the Rs. 20,000 crore concessions granted to Reliance Industries Limited which was exploring the Krishna-Godavari basin gas reserves and the Rs. 2,500 crore granted to private firms in the name of Special Economic Zones. Responding to queries, he said it was too early to comment about the strength of the political parties in the Parliament and the Opposition was set to emerge stronger in the days to come.

Dignified approach

On the State issues, he wanted Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to adopt a softer and dignified approach instead of always provoking the Opposition with his remarks.
