Four held for cheating
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Personnel of Central Crime Branch of the Chennai Suburban Police have arrested a 56-year-old government employee and three others, and are searching for the employee’s daughter and her companion in a Rs.1.6-crore fraud detected at an office of the Special Tahsildar (Land Acquisition), National Highways, at Poonamallee.
A press release stated that the CCB team arrested Raniammal, an office assistant, from Padiayanallur bus stop near Red Hills on Friday following a tip-off. During interrogation, she confessed to the crime along with her daughter Sheeba and her companion Pandian, both of whom are reported to have fled to Singapore.
The case relates to the disappearance of 13 demand drafts originally issued by the State government to a group of people from whom land was acquired for widening National Highway 4 (Bangalore Highway) between Koyambedu and Poonamallee.
As the beneficiaries had moved the court seeking higher compensation, Raniammal forged documents, created bogus records of her accomplices and managed to issue fresh demand drafts in their names, thereby swindling Rs.1.64 crore.
Three others – Velu, Kumar and Dilli Babu – who helped Raniammal, have also been arrested.
