TIRUCHI: Photographing of beneficiaries for the issue of biometric smart cards under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for life saving treatments will be completed within three months in the district, said Transport Minister K.N. Nehru on Saturday.

The Minister, who inaugurated photographing of beneficiaries for issue of smart cards at Poovalur village in Lalgudi taluk, said that families having an annual income of Rs.72,000 and below were eligible to get free treatment for 51 types of ailments, including surgeries under the scheme.

Mr. Nehru pointed out that 25 cameras would be used every day for taking photographs of the beneficiaries and the thumb impression of the beneficiaries would also be recorded in the smart card.

He said that the photographing exercise would be held for three days in Poovalur, Tirumangalam and Manakkal from Saturday.

The Minister said that each beneficiary family would enjoy benefits up to Rs.1 lakh for certain procedures in private hospitals and pay wards in Government hospitals. The Star Insurance, a private insurance company, has entered into contracts with a number of hospitals in private health care centres and hospitals in the State and the Government would pay a premium of Rs.500 per annum, he said.

Each beneficiary would have to produce a biometric smart card bearing the health and treatment details of each member of the family to avail the service. Camps would be conducted across the State and a door-to-door campaign would be launched to identify beneficiaries, who do not belong to any of the welfare boards but satisfy the criteria.

Collector T. Soundiah, who presided over the function, explained the people about the salient features of the scheme. The District Revenue Officer, V. Dakshinamurthy, Lalgudi MLA A. Soundapandian, Social Security Scheme Special Deputy Collector G. Manivannan and others participated in the function.
