Rajnath Singh NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh, in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has said that not only an immediate contingency plan needs to be implemented to deal with the impact of drought on farmers, there was also need for a long-term plan to help them adapt to climate change. The BJP also wants a national task force on adaptation to climate change and sustainable agriculture set up. Mr. Rajnath Singh said he was aware that the government had recently unfolded plans for such a task force. “But this cannot wait, as time was not on our side.” He pointed out that climate change experts expected the mean average temperature in India to increase by 3 to 6 degrees centigrade by the end of the 21st century. It could be more pronounced in northern India, the breadbasket of the country. The government ought to immediately deal with drought and the high prices of essential food items.
