Six revellers drown

Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: Six persons drowned in an irrigation tank at Barangedgi village under Beerkur police station limits, 55 km away from here, on Monday afternoon when they were trying to immerse a Ganesh idol in a tank.

All the bodies were fished out and handed over to the parents and relatives within hours of the accident. They were identified as Bilkondi Ramu (23), Bilkondi Raju (30), Chinnapur Veerappa (27), Manappagari Raju (25), Deepana Raju (30) and Chadani Umakanth (20).

They drowned while trying to immerse the idol by taking it to the middle of the tank, where the water was quite deep due to the inflows received following the recent rain in the district. No one among them knew swimming, according to the Beerkur police.

Revenue Divisional Officer (Bodhan) Swarnalatha and Deputy SP Srinivas Reddy supervised the relief operations. A pall of groom descended on the remote village with parents and relatives of the victims weeping inconsolably.
