Coimbatore: After tasting victories over both Poland and six-time champion Brazil, India went down to Russia 20-25, 19-25, 13-25 in a Pool ‘D’ match of the FIVB 2009 World youth volleyball championship at the Bassano del Grappa in Italy on Sunday. Russia dominated the contest for most part. It displayed terrific blocking ability and tremendous attacking power. And, that did India in. John Christopher played a stellar role for India with nine points. Italy, Iran, Argentina and Russia qualified as the top teams of their respective pools, while Tunisia, Serbia, Spain and India also advanced to the top two brackets of the second phase of the competition. Sridharan optimistic“Our boys failed to strike form when it mattered most. We failed in both block and attack, but no complaints. We will bounce back in our next match against host Italy,” said G.E. Sridharan, the head coach of the team. For the next phase beginning at Jesolo on Tuesday, India is grouped with Argentina, Italy and Serbia. “We had a good training and our boys are all raring to go,” added Sridharan.
