High Court dismisses plea against MLAs’ salary hike
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: It is for the Legislative Assembly to consider what is appropriate for MLAs, the Madras High Court said on Monday.
Dismissing a petition by a social worker, K.R. Ramasamy, seeking a direction to the State Finance Secretary not to implement the salary hike for MLAs, the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice H.L. Gokhale and Justice D. Murugesan, said it was not a matter in which the court could go into, though prima facie there appeared to be a justification for the revision, which had been effected.
The petitioner had stated that the Finance Minister had announced a hike in the salary of MLAs.
Legislators were expected to serve the people. In the distant past, only honorarium was paid to MLAs when they attended the Assembly session.
The present hike in salary was unwarranted. The MLAs had been given free accommodation with modern facilities.
It was not necessary to allot them free land or land at concessional rates in the city, which was facing acute shortage of space.
The Bench said as far as the proposed housing for MLAs was concerned, the Government Pleader had stated that there was no such proposal. The revision in the pay and vehicle allowance was as per the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Payment of Salaries Act.
There was no reason for the court to keep the petition pending.
