BJP to ‘go slow’ on action against Shourie
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: While there is no question of the expelled leader Jaswant Singh being taken back in the party, the BJP has made it equally clear that it decided to “go slow” on disciplinary action against its MP Arun Shourie, whom the RSS singled out for praise despite his describing the leadership as “Humpty Dumpty” and “Alice in Blunderland.” Not even a letter asking him to explain his conduct has so far been sent, according to a party functionary.
As for the resignation of the Leader of the Opposition, Lok Sabha Secretariat officials said Parliamentary rules demand that if L.K. Advani were to quit the statutory position, he would have to send a resignation letter to the Speaker, besides informing the BJP president that the parliamentary party should meet to elect a new leader. The party would then have to inform the Speaker of the election of its leader.
In the case of other Opposition and ruling coalition partners, there is no requirement of their submitting resignation to the Speaker. For, those parliamentary party leaders do not hold any statutory position. The Speaker would just have to be informed of their new leader.
