Assistance to widows of ex-footballers

NEW DELHI: Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill has approved the financial assistance to widows of the members of the Indian football team which had reached the semifinals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

Nine players of the team are no longer alive and the Ministry could find widows of only four members of the side. They are Mrs. Sophia Rahman (wife of T.A. Rahman), Mrs. Alphonica Thangaraj (wife of Peter Thangaraj), Mrs. Baby Kittu (wife of K.S. Kittu) and Mrs. Nanjamma (wife of M.K. Kempiah).

Each of them will receive Rs 1.5 lakh from the National Welfare Fund for sportspersons.

Earlier, nine surviving members of the team were given an assistance of Rs. 1.5 lakh each. They were Samar Banerjee, S.S. Narayan, A.S. Salam, A. Hussain, N.K. Nandi, P.K. Banerjee, M.Z. Zulfikar, Tulsidas Balaram and Keshto Pal. — Sports Reporter
