Khosla stuns Kidambi

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Shiven Khosla upset Grandmaster Sundararajan Kidambi in the first round of the fourth Kolkata Open Grandmaster chess tournament at the Gorky Sadan here on Tuesday.

Khosla, an Asian under-14 champion and National under-11 champion two years back, made full use of Kidambi’s blunder on the 17th move and won in only 20 moves of a Ruy Lopez game.

International Master Suvrajit Saha produced the second upset. Playing GM Anton Filippov of Uzbekistan, the local player tried to put early pressure in a Queen’s Indian defence game. The game drifted into an unclear middle game. When the GM offered a draw on the 39th move, Saha refused it and converted his better position to force Filippov to resign on the 50th move.

Rahul holds Hua

Rahul Sangma, playing on the third board, held GM Ni Hua of China to a creditable draw. The Delhi player obtained an unusual variation of the Ruy Lopez. The game went into a double rook end game with a pawn deficit for the Indian. He, however, won back the pawn after which he went into a king and pawn end game to sign the peace treaty on the 47th move. Mamedyarov was impressive in his victory against B.S. Shivanand. He launched a kingside attack and the Indian was forced to resign on the 39th move when the top seed was about to checkmate.

As many as 114 participants with 34 GMs and 27 IMs are in the field. GM Arun Prasad withdrew at the last moment because of illness.

Important results: First round: Shakriyar Mamedyarov bt B.S. Shivananda, Ni Hua drew with Rahul Sangma, Gadir Guseinov bt V. Saravanan, Aleksej Aleksandrov bt Aditya Udeshi, Abu Sufian Shakil lost to S.S. Ganguly, Praveen Kumar lost to Mamedov Rauf, Parimarjan Negi drew with Vikramaditya Kamble, Anwesh Upadhyay lost to Le Quang Liem.
